The world is your Oyster & Ponder.er
Just a small venue, just a small presentation, just a small amount of people
at this Hong Kong Fashion Farm foundation Fall/Winter '21 presentation last
march in Paris during Fashionweek. It was one of the few events taking place
during last winters semi-lockdown and almost all the shows and presentations
were digital. The fashion farm foundation is a non-profit organization
established in 2012 aiming to promote Hong Kong fashiondesigners. It is
founded by a group of enthusiastic fashiondesigners and fashion educators in
Hong Kong. They also encourage collaborations between Hong Kong (fashion)
design and business, lifestyle, educational and the cultural sector. We've
been visiting their presentation since 2017 which normally takes place at
Garage Amelot in Paris. This is a huge public garage where different levels
are used by brands for showcasing their new collection. Unfortunately, since the pandemic, the
event takes place in a smaller venue with less brands.
THE WORLS IS YOUR OYSTER is a Hong Kong-based label established in March 2014, founded by two designers, Calvin Chan & Joyce Kun. The World Is Your Oyster aims to provide the essential style and quality for the the men and women of the new generation. The vision embraces the characteristic of formal tailoring with a touch of the street wear elements from the youngsters’ influence. The collections often feature clean silhouette and surprising choice of material to give just the right amount of drama. The distinct aesthetic is achieved by playing attention to small details in all of the designs.
Hong Kong label PONDER.ER was born out of London’s Central Saint Martins,
where founders Alex Po and Derek Chang initially met. As independent
designers, the pair come together from opposite directions: one drawing on
fun and colourful vintage menswear pieces, the other inspired by a love-hate
relationship with urban life in their home city. With one eye on gender fluidity and another on
sustainability, PONDER.ER combines forward-thinking textile innovations with
small traditional production houses in Hong Kong to craft their collections
of considered garments: wielding semi-sheer knits, smocked organza,
hand-dyed fabrics and body-clinging fits to transform conventional forms into pieces that are subversively fragile and vulnerable.
The details which The world is your Oyster is known for, is seen in both skirts designs. The tailoring, the print and the simple closure (with a big button shield) of the black and white skirt, makes it our favourite. Combined with a light weighted, soft knit, just with a small bow, gives the outfit class and style. We also loved to see some of the the white seams on the cream A-line skirt, making it playful. We could imagine someone noticing it and wondering if it's supposed to be there (but no guts to ask). Exactly that's what we like.
Ps check the text on the blouse pocket :-)
Ponder.er showed us oldskool batik techniques on a denim felted jacket and five-pocket straight pants. The creamy knitdesign was everything in between a dress or a large slip-on jumper. Wearable on pants, skirts or with big combat boots, gender fluid, and undefinable in it's form. Everything you need for a cold winter.
